PHOENIX – John Cena was presented with Make-A-Wish’s highest honor – the Chris Grecius Award – by the Foundation’s President, David Williams. Cena accepted the award Saturday in front of nearly 40 WWE Circle of Champions honorees and their families at a special WrestleMania weekend event.
“It’s an honor and a privilege,” Cena said. “I just enjoy the charity and the concept of it. It’s an honor to be a recipient of the Chris Grecius Award.”
The WWE Superstar was a special, surprise guest at WrestleMania weekend’s annual Make-A-Wish pizza party for the Circle of Champions honorees whose wish it was to come to WrestleMania. Upon seeing Cena, the children and their families erupted in cheers.
“I certainly want you guys to understand that I’m here for you. I appreciate the fact that you all want to come see us. I appreciate the fact that most of you are extremely happy when you get to see me,” Cena said to applause from the kids and their families in the Phoenix Convention Center ballroom.
Before presenting the award to Cena, Williams explained the significance it holds, especially in the Valley of the Sun, where Make-A-Wish was founded three decades ago.
“It started with a young boy by the name Chris Grecius. He had a wish. He had a favorite TV show and he admired policeman. His wish was that he wanted to be a policeman. So there wasn’t even a Make-A-Wish Foundation at that time, but a group of people right here in Phoenix granted his wish to be a policeman,” Williams explained.
“That was the start of Make-A-Wish Foundation 30 years ago. The reason I tell you that is because the highest award we give is given in his name, and it’s the Chris Grecius Award. And who better to give that award to than a guy who has granted over 140 wishes?” Williams said.
The Make-A-Wish president told a story about the Superstar’s tireless dedication to the nation’s largest wish-granting organization, whose mission it is to give hope, strength and joy to children with life-threatening medical conditions.
“I was with him not that long ago, just right up the road here at Coldstone Creamery’s headquarters. There was a young man,” Williams paused. “John got in his car in Las Vegas and drove down himself just that day to be able to grant that wish. And time after time he doesn’t just do a handshake and a picture, but he spends time with each and every kid whose wish it is to meet him.
“Even today, your wish was to be here at WrestleMania, and John, who has an amazingly busy schedule, took the time to be here with you. It just shows that you talk about a person who puts his fame to good use. I can’t think of a better person who does that.”
Before signing autographs, posing for photos and presenting the children with their personalized WWE Circle of Champions plaques, Cena told them that every time he grants a wish, it brightens his spirit.
“It seems to give me hope. It seems to give me exactly the amount of happiness I need to get through even the longest of days,” he said.
“So I just want you to know that you do more for me than I can ever do for you. It’s an honor. It’s a privilege to be here with you today.”
I saw a preview of True Jackson VP for next Saturday night (April 3rd 2010). Where John Cena will be guest staring.
Here is a preview:
"Amanda unexpectedly shows up at True's slumber party, and the evening turns competitive. Elsewhere, Ryan and Jimmy attend a preview screening of a John Cena movie and wind up meeting the action star."
• John Cena to be at the Kids Choice Awards Tonight
27 Mar 2010
This Saturday, March 27, John Cena will appear on the 2010 Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards. Cena, who challenges Batista for the WWE Championship the following night at WrestleMania, is scheduled to appear on the show alongside the United States' Olympic gold medaist, Apolo Anton Ohno.
The 2010 Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards, hosted this year by comedian/actor Kevin James, will air on Nickelodeon at 8 p.m. ET.
In what was billed as a “Final Face-Off,” WWE Champion Batista and John Cena had an opportunity to confront each other less than a week before clashing on The Grandest Stage of Them All.
The Animal, surrounded by bodyguards, kicked off the trash talking by describing how he’s intimidated and gotten inside the head of his opponent. Cena fired back, saying that Batista will never keep him down, no matter what. After the WWE Champion snarled his reply, Cena had heard enough: He decimated Batista’s bodyguard detail before trading blows with The Animal himself. WrestleMania may be six days away, but the fireworks tonight would not be contained.
Sheamus, Cody Rhodes & Ted DiBiase def. Triple H & Randy Orton in a 3-on-2 Handicap Match
There hasn’t been this much animosity between partners since Tiger Woods’ last marriage counseling session. Triple H was forced to team with his despised enemy, Randy Orton, when the two faced off against their respective WrestleMania opponents, Sheamus as well as Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase, in a 3-on-2 Handicap Match.
Before the bout, Rhodes and DiBiase, who will face one another – along with The Viper – in a Triple Threat Match, made it clear that their alliance had frayed somewhat. During the match, Orton nearly punished Rhodes for his seeming betrayal, but the Irishman kicked him square in the jaw, sending him to the canvas and pinning him for the win. His WrestleMania foe was sure to send a message, though, as The Game sent Sheamus over the top rope.
