They seemed the perfect competitive complement: Mark Henry’s powerful yin to Evan Bourne’s high-flying yang. Yet even this potent pairing couldn’t overcome The Legacy’s Cody Rhodes & Ted DiBiase. With all four Superstars among the 30 participants in this year’s Royal Rumble, each seemed eager to prove themselves and gain momentum in the run up to the Rumble. Rhodes & DiBiase, though, along with Legacy ringleader Randy Orton, appear to have found their groove recently, making it exceedingly difficult to throw them off track.
Randy Orton def. John Cena and Kofi Kingston in a Triple Threat Match
Enemy of my enemy is my friend. By that logic, John Cena and Kofi Kingston should be the best of buds. After all, each has had major issues with the arrogant Randy Orton. When the three met in a Triple Threat Match to determine the No. 1 contender to the WWE Title against Sheamus at Royal Rumble, however, it was Orton who emerged victorious. Not that he did it alone.
The Viper prevailed with a distraction, compliments of his Legacy henchmen, Cody Rhodes & Ted DiBiase. While the alliance had been teetering, the trio seems to have solidified their partnership in the past two weeks.
I didn't think I would be able to make this post so fast but we are BACK! After a back-and-forth war, it appeared as though The Animal was going to finish off The Master of the 619 with a Batista Bomb. But before he could execute the maneuver, the arena lights dimmed and the eerie sound of The Undertaker’s gong reverberated throughout the arena. When the lights came back on, Batista lay writhing in pain.
Seizing the moment, Mysterio took it to Batista, dropping him with the 619. But, before he could fully capitalize, the arena lights dimmed once again, coupled with the tolling of The Deadman’s gong. When the lights came back on this time, both Superstars lay wasted in the ring.
Although The Phenom was never seen, his presence was felt throughout the WWE Universe, as bursts of fire shot from the top of the entrance ramp.
The ominous outcome leaves the lingering question. Who will claim the No. 1 Contender spot?
Last Monday, Randy Orton gave his Legacy charges, Cody Rhodes & Ted DiBiase, an ultimatum: Win your match or be barred from the group. This week, the Legacy ringleader was forced to choke down a spoonful of his own medicine. Earlier in the evening, Rhodes & DiBiase confronted their mentor and told him that if he lost his match against Kofi Kingston, he would be booted from the group.
With Rhodes & DiBiase looking on at ringside, The Viper clashed with Kingston in a rivalry that has boiled over several times in the past. On this occasion, though, Orton would prevail, perhaps in part due to a bit of unexpected incentive.
Batista vs. R-Truth ended when time expired in their Beat the Clock Challenge Match
Mysterio stuck around to watch his former comrade-in-arms Batista attempt to make short work of R-Truth in the final Challenge Match. But just when it appeared as if The Animal was about to pin The Rapping Superstar in time to beat Rey Mysterio’s mark, the masked Superstar he once called brother surprised all by pulling the Official from the ring. Not only did the unorthodox move prevent the three-count, it also took away the precious seconds that would close the door of Batista’s championship hopes.
It appeared as if Mysterio had overcome the odds once again by becoming the official No. 1 Contender to The Deadman’s World Title. But that all came to a screeching halt when SmackDown Consultant Vickie Guerrero suddenly interrupted his celebration. She informed Mysterio that because he broke the rules and denied the Challenge its clear victor, Mysterio would have to face The Animal in one week to decide who will face The Demon of Death Valley for the World Heavyweight Championship at Royal Rumble.
